and engraved walrus ivory okimono in cream color with age patina, markings unique
to walrus, semi-gloss to glossy surface, engravings with sumi in the eyes and
the embroideries of the robes. Signed on the bottom next to an engraved lotus
leaf. Depicting the kindly Kinko Sennin, a great Taoist hermit, mounted on the
enormous carp that carried him to the Dragon King’s palace under the sea where
sea creatures inspired him to devote himself to teaching the sacredness of all
forms of life. In this version of his adventures, carp and rider are emerging
from a swirl of clouds that rise from a magical gourd held in the sennin’s hand.
