Old
Japanese Ivory Netsuke Skeleton
The Thinker
Signature: Gyokuyuki. Circa: 1900s' H 2 in.(5cm), W 1 in.(2.5cm), D 1
in.(2.5cm) Condition:
excellent! In
this carving by Gyokuyuki (full name Tomio Suzuki, born November 2nd, 1924. A
prolific Tokyo school netsukshi). The seated skeleton of failing senses, contemplating
death now in reality other than speculation in life. This netsuke is a reflection
of the samurai spirit in Japanese culture-- ever conscious of death. Instead of
facial expression. The weariness of the skeleton here shown in its composition.
Fragile but tactile, the subtle details comprise an outstanding work by a well
known netsukeshi. The netsuke is carved from quality elephant tusk. It remains
pure white despite its age. Overall it is in very good condition.
