This turn-of-the-century Thai bronze Saraswati beguiles and entices the Hindi Goddess of Art and Wisdom. She was believed to be born from Avalokiteshvara's compassionate tear and worshipped by Hindu and Buddhist devotees. There is an intricately rendered life-like youthfulness in this large bronze. The Goddess of Knowledge is wearing a royal high crown. Her slender figure is dressed in a pleated princess dhoti with ornate strands of pearls, large necklaces, and foliate ornaments. She sits in royal ease on a squared double plinth opens up to reveal a forest as she sways in the motion of composition playing her Veena instrument on the tree canopy. Saraswati is a river goddess; her music is believed to emanating like the current of a river flowing in formless waves of stillness and silence. The aged bronze has a rich patina, though places that have been touched repeatedly over time reveal a shining gilded bronze. The cast is intricate, mounted on a custom-fit oak wood base, in excellent condition overall.
