Geisha
Holding Flower
Signed: Gyokuyuki, Early 20th Century
H 6 in.(15cm.), W 2 in.(5cm.), D 1.75 in.(4.5cm.)
Condition: very good

A fine okimono in cream to honey colored tones of ivory, with striations and markings scattered over the garment area and on the back of the piece. Made for export during the early years of the twentieth century, the delicate figure of a woman is posed in a demure posture, with her robes held close about her as she offers a delicately carved bouquet of peonies. Her head bends slightly downward, the features smooth and sensitively rendered, her face shadowed by an elaborate and carefully engraved formal coiffure. Her robe and obi are inscribed with embroidered motifs of leaves and flowers. She stands in her clogs on an ivory base that is engraved on the bottom with a geometric pattern and the fluidly written signature: Gyokuyuki.
