Signed: Masafusa. Circa: mid 20th Century
H 14.75 in.(37cm), W 7 in.(18cm), D 7 in.(18cm)
Condition: minor imperfection, overall very good.
Standing
at almost 15 inches tall, this sensitively realized Japanese beauty is named:
the Peony Maiden of Summer. With a fan in one hand against her chest, she is wearing
a cream white kimono, meticulously decorated with hand-painted butterflies and
flowers motifs. The large Hakata doll is beautifully crafted in a naturalistic
dancing pose. Signed Masafusa. It is of a limited edition created in the mid Showa
period; yet undoubtedly a fine example of the extraordinary elegance in romanticism
since the Meiji era (1868-1911), when Hakata doll first began to gained worldwide
acclaim at the Paris World Fair. Other than a barely visible scratch lines near
her left eye, the doll is overall in excellent condition.
