Antique
Japanese Netsuke
Gama Sennin
Carrying Big Frog
Signature: unsigned.
Circa: early 19th Century
h.2.5 in.(6.25cm), w.1 in.(2.5cm), d.1 in.(2.5cm)
Condition: Excellent This
large cream colored netsuke represents the beloved Gama Sennin grasping an enormous
frog. Broad deep cutting of the dense unyielding antler material has allowed a
heavy accumulation of dark patina on this piece, which in contrast to the soft
polish on the creamy masses, creates a virile graphic quality which is especially
handsome on the back, and comprises all the familiar aspects of this character,
including his benevolent _expression, his round pot-belly, and his coat of mugwort
leaves. Somewhat worn from age and handling, the smooth surface, polished to a
soft shine, has not lost any of its details. The frog, representing prosperity,
is firmly in hand as Gama looks out smiling, upright on bare feet. --RW Private Collection | |
