Japanese Carved Netsuke Fukurokuju
Playing w. Two Karako
Netsuke Signature: Tomosada, Circa: early
19th Century Recorded
in Netsuke, MT Hindson Collection by Neil Davey #3002 H 1.5 in.(4cm),
W 1.25 in.(3cm), D 0.6 in.(1.3cm)
Condition: minor chip and usage worn There
are superb details displaying in this delicately rendered netsuke, elegantly bringing
to life the god of longevity, the ever beaming Fukurokuju in an aged but wise
expression, firmly holding a knobbed staff in his right hand, smilingly looking
down at the two spirited karako, to his left the child is pulling his robes, and
to his right another child is grabbing his staff, as if they are trying to get
the god of wisdom to play. The immortal's robes are supple and engraved with intricate
details, and the children are beatific in their upward gazes. There are two himotoshi
carved into the back of the netsuke, where the artist signature still shown through
on the well worn surface. The ivory netsuke aged beautifully in gold cream. It
has an old chip to the staff but otherwise is in good condition.
