Japanese Carved Okimono Daibutsu
Amitabha in Meditation Signed:
Konori. Circa: Showa, early 1900S'
H
3 in.(7.5cm), W 1.8 in.(4.5cm), D 1.6 in.(3.5cm)
Condition: minor imperfection, o.a. good! The
Daibutsu, "Great Buddha", is a 50 feet high bronze statue of Amidha
Buddha, the Buddha of Infinite Light. The bronze has been a famous landmark in
Kamakura Japan since 1252. This Showa era ivory okimono is a deeply contemplative
depiction of this famous landmark. There is a delicate and precise detail given
to the lotus petals the Buddha sits on. Larger petals reveal more delicately smaller
petals that are bound by a precisely designated band. The robes of this Daibutsu
display a similar articulated delicacy of design. Its perfect symmetry communicates
the presence and potency of equanimity through all happenings. The countenance
of Daibutsu's face radiates a luminous peace in deep concentration. A smooth oval
indicates the open and radiate crown chakra at the top of the head. At the bottom
the richness of the original ivory, the markings of the grain are pronounce. There
are some incidental hairline cracks and two filled chips on the right shoulder
and upper chest. Overall this okimono is in good condition. (SD)
