Spiral Snake Catching Mouse Netsuke

Prey and predator are intertwined with the closeness of lovers or a ying yang sign. Here three-twined spiral snake rests his head on a mouse that looks like he is in complete relax or deep surrender. Why move when all is lost? Perhaps the mouse hopes that stillness will prolong the moment of the final strike. The artist's rendered story in this netsuke is its distinctive feature. The scales are deeply crosshatched with dimensional sensitivity and the simple lines in the subject's face still communicate the tensioned pathos. (SD)
