Bhaisajyaguru, the Medicine Master Lapis Lazuli Light. The Buddha who transforms attachment, ignorance and pride, the root of all illness and suffering. He is the spiritual force that encompasses a wide and holistic view of health. True to the Bodhisattva consciousness as we heal ourselves, the world and those around us are also transformed. As shown here is an early 20th century Chinese cloisonne is depicting a Tibetan style Medicine Buddha dressed in the monk’s robes, seated on a lotus seat, he is holding a medicine bowl filled with the healing elixir, in his right hand the myrobalan plant. The countenance of this Buddha reveals an equipoise in lucid contentment and magnificent spiritual energy.
Note that Making cloisonné is a complicated process that consists of base-hammering, soldering, enamel-filling, enamel firing, polishing and gilding. It is a highly cherished enamelware with a history that dates back to the Yuan Dynasty (1271 - 1368). In the Ming period, the emperor Jingtai (1450-1456) was very much interested in bronze-casting techniques, under his reign the color process improved and created the bright blue that enhanced to the cloisonne aesthetic; in time it became universally popular and known as Jingtai Blue (景泰藍). |
