A
courteous reminder to be ever alert and aware, this netsuke, carved of fruitwood
and with a beautiful tonal age patina ranging from sienna to deep umber, depicts
a Shinto priest scrubbing a mokugyo, a fish head-shaped drum used in meditation,
chanting and rituals. The mokugyo is made in the shape of a fish because fish
keep their eyes open at all times. As such it has become a symbol for attentiveness,
(or the lack of it if the practitioner is seen using it as a pillow,) therefore
the caution to keep the mind fresh and alert, clear and acute as a well-polished
mokugyo.
