Chinese Cloisonne Bronze Buddha
Shakyamuni
Earth Pointing Gesture
Origin: China. Circa: early 20th century H
18.5 in.(47cm), W 12.5 in.(32cm), D 10 in(25cm.)
Condition: very good This
early 20th century Chinese statue of Shakyamuni offers a culturally inspired depiction
of the historical Buddha at enlightenment. This Buddha has a very pronounced crown
topknot and sumptuously shaped ears rendered with detail. His countenance, enhanced
by the natural warm glow of the statue’s bronze patina, is youthful, full and
peaceful. The lips are plump the eyes attentive behind the closed lids. Shakyamuni’s
hands are poised in the earth pointing mudra where at enlightenment Shakyamuni
acknowledges the Mother Earth. The cloisonné enamelwork depicts a colorful festive
floral pattern that adds levity and warmth to this antique statue. (SD)
