Antique
Japanese Lacquered Wood Statue Blind
Monk
In Search of The Way
Origin: Edo Japan, Circa: 19th Century
or earlier H 8 in.(20cm), W 4 in.(10cm),
D 3 in.(7.5cm) Condition: lacquere loss, minor imperfection This
spirited carving of a blind monk is both bold and lively. The unique carving is
precisely conceived with force in the solid posture of the pilgrim. With a circular
shaped straw hat in front like a shield, holding a walking stick, two foot slightly
apart in a firm stand, his slightly uplifted chin conveys strength and dignity,
while his large flowing sleeves suggesting movements in the wind. The
carving has succeeded in representing the Zen parable of a man on the spiritual
path, with an image
that can hardly be improved upon. Which made this powerfully executed wood carving
perfect for Zen meditation purpose. Despite such fine artistry, the Blind Monk
is unsigned. Judging from the style and condition of this rare carving, we
can safely attribute the statue to mid 19th century.
