East Asian Marble Stone Head
Shakyamuni Buddha Gandharan
Style Circa: early 20th
century h.
10 in.(25cm.) X w. 5 in.(12.5cm.) X d. 6 in.(15cm.)
Measurement not including wood base Condition:
minor abrasion, o.a. excellent! Carved
in pure black marble, an elegant head of Shakyamuni in the Gandharan style, echoing
the Roman influence that was strongly felt for centuries. |

Forms of the
head are crisply defined, with a sensitively modeled aquiline nose, outlined mouth,
and the ears, interestingly, not very long, a feature in agreement with the Buddha’s
youthful countenance, for he has not yet cut his long hair which is piled up into
a meticulously rendered swirlingchignon. According
to traditional belief, when Shakyamuni cut off his long locks, the short hair
remaining sprung into little clockwise curls and remained that way. Though the
style recalls the Roman influence, the spirit of the piece is entirely Asian,
with great expressive power in the soft gaze and eloquent profile. Sold
