An outstanding rare find, highly detailed with many elements and projecting parts, well carved and expressively animated, richly finished with engraved motifs and textures. Light cream color with a patina of age and highly polished from handling over time. Eyes are of inlaid black coral, the face and head wonderfully descriptive, showing bristling hair around the horns and down the back of the head, bulging eyes and open mouth howling in pain as the stricken oni leaps up in alarm, a large hornet having done its worst at his nether end. Textured areas and dark recessions contrast nicely with the glossy polished surfaces of the demon’s knobby musculature.
