peasant at market, blowing bubbles to attract buyers, a water bucket in hand for
dipping his bubble pipe. He stands attired in peasant clothing that is nonetheless
heavily embroidered, possibly announcing his wares as needlework, for on his back
he carries a finely embroidered zafu, or cushion. Traditional Japanese homes do
not have chairs, and cushions of various kinds are used for sitting, dining and
meditation. Well carved from cream colored ivory, marked with striations and Schreger
lines, age patina and remaining traces of sumi, blue, green and reddish pigment.
