Vintage Southeast Asian Bronze Statue
Private Collection
This rare bronze Hevajra statue is traditionally associated with Tantric Buddhism, which flourished in Southeast Asia, including parts of Indonesia such as Bali, Java, and the Khmer Empire. Imbued with spirit and poise, this complex deity is depicted in a rare form, featuring nine heads and ten arms; his main right hand grants protection with the abhaya mudra. Standing on a lotus pedestal with one leg raised in a dancing posture, it symbolizes the soul's inherent independence, echoing the comic dance of the Hindu deity Shiva Nataraja. This fierce emanation, incorporating both Hindu and Buddhist iconography, thrusts eight arms holding choppers, battle-axes, vajra scepters, and various attributes. Skull cups are represented as oil lamps for ceremonial prayers calling upon fierce power for enlightenment. Hevajra embodies the union of method and wisdom and the transformation of negative mental states on the Tantric path. Lacquered and gilded, this gorgeous bronze statue radiates a potent energy. Its remarkable preservation, along with the contrast between the dark bronze deity and the gilded lotus base, is a luminous tribute to the region's superb artistry.
