Sennin, a sage with deep alchemical knowledge of ethno-pharmacology, the herbs
and medicines that heal the body and inspire the soul. As shown in this Edo era
antler netsuke. The youthful sennin is clothed in banyan leaves, and carrying
a large three-legged toad on his shoulders, a symbol of fortune and wealth. The
netsuke is cream to rust in aged patina, carved in round and capped in cylinder
form, free of projections or extraneous attachments, tactile and well worn from
handling over time, bearing a smooth satin finish with burnished highlights and
himotoshi on the back.
