This centuries-old spectacular carving of the Guardian of the East, Dhrtarastra 魔礼海 (Japanese: Jikokuten 持國天王), stands on the sacred five-peak mountain Mount Meru, his right leg thrust forth, hands playing the Chinese pipa, in the course of converting mortals to the divine realm of consciousness. The spiritual warrior is exceedingly well-carved. He wears a Tibetan-style ritual helmet, cloaked in ornate cuirass, a taotie-headed belt, protective leg armors and high boots, flanked with a long sash flowing around him, his fiercely bulging eyes anchored in a dignified look of mythical countenance with unwavering intensity sweeping with force. Once beautifully gilded and painted in polychrome, This remarkably well-preserved camphor wood statue has a darkened patina. Besides flaking pigments and a couple of small crack lines, the Heavenly Warrior radiates an aura of timelessness with a sweet herbal aroma.
