We
are delighted to offer an extremely rare pair of large antique Anglo Indian ivory
carvings. Despite our tireless search on the World Wide Web, we've found that
none are available, and particularly not at this large size. Available for auction
here is for the smaller of the two ivory carvings. The Snake-Catcher figure is
measure at 11.5 inches in height, and weight 22.6 ounces, all without the wood
base.
For such an early Indian carving, this figure has remarkable realistic
features and natural postures. The carving is strong and broad, yet fine, with
unusual freedom and expressive living qualities. Leaning to his right shoulder,
the large log and snake held in the catcher's two hands are boldly carved in openwork;
such three-dimensional treatment enhanced the figure with sculptural quality.
Like the fisherman ivory carving, the dynamic pose and sophisticated artistry
of this figure indicated an early European influence, the carving is likely from
the workshops at Murshidabad in North-Eastern India in the early 19th century.
The
statue is beautifully marked and grained, it has an elegant cream white color
on both front and back side. Except for a small crack on the snake, and near the
base a 1.5 inch small repair with two minor chips on the back of the robe; of
as much age as the carving, the figure is considerably in very good condition.
