The
Buddha Amitabha, whose name means Infinite Light. He is believed to be presiding
in the Land of Bliss, and the brilliant rays of his compassion reach out to all
sentient beings in the furthest expanse of the universe.

This
ornate parcel gilt bronze shrine evokes Amitabha in a lively presence. He is seated
in a meditation pose upon a lotus throne, with a large aureole behind him that
resembles blooming leaves, which merging the three figures in the rare half-moon
shaped shrine, including the attending arhats Shariputra and Maudgalyayana in
postures of prayer and devotion beside him. Amitabha is customarily sitting in
dhyana mudra in deep contemplation. His smiling face is serene and sensitively
detailed with gilded gold. The arhats are dressed in traditional monks robes,
where in the front of the shrine are two roaring lions that symbolized the perfection
of wisdom, and the adorning flowers in the back symbolized The Pure Land. Overall
the alter emanates a effulgence of deep peace that fills the space. It would have
been a centerpiece in a substantial family compound a part of the morning and
evening ritual.
