Chokaro Sennin is one of the eight Taoist immortals. Here he holds a staff in his left hand, and slung across his back is a gourd, which was said to contain a mule that will carry him a thousand miles a day. Well carved in cream colored on slightly translucent antler engraved with sumi, its tactile design effectively preserved the original look and feel. The slightly worn netsuke is unsigned. However its large oval himotoshi and material indicated that it's a mid 19th-century carving, at a time when netsuke was considered more of a folk art but not as a true art form, and most carvers were worked anonymously.
