In the
old Japan, to give a goat netsuke as a gift was considered a gesture wishing the
recipient a good life. Goat is also the eighth animal in the Asian zodiac. People
born in the year of the goat are believed to be wise, generous, passionate, elegant
and artistic by nature.
This recumbent goat with head turned back to the left, his eyes inlaided
in dark horn, swirl of incised stained hair work in contrast with the face and
horns, a himotoshi to his side, and a smaller one in the base. On the rear right
thigh is the signature Hiroyuki, which is incised and stained on an oval reserve.
A well carved netsuke from a quality piece of ivory. It is modeled in deep dimensions
with sharply observed details. The well polished planes of soft round edges are
perfectly tactile for its purpose. |
