We
acquired this heavy yellow marble Meditating Buddha from ChengDu,
Sichuan province of China. The strong grains and orange colored
veins of the stone must had posted quite a challenge to the
artisan who created this Meditating Buddha. Nevertheless,
he succeeded in capturing the immortality of this youthful
Buddha with a distinctive simplicity seldom seen in Chinese
Buddhist art.
The
Yellow Marble Buddha is depicted with two feet in full lotus
position, and hands locked in deep meditation ( Dhyana Mudra
). The stone has an aged appreance that may suggested it is
an older piece. However, we conservatively dated this carving
at : GuangXu, Late Qing Dynasty (circa: 1875-1908).
