Polychrome Wood Buddha Ganesh
Offering Coconut
Origin: Bali, Circa: 19th Century
H 13 in.(335cm.), W 7 in.(18cm), D 4 in.(10cm)
Condition: minor crack, o.a. good Balinese
Ganesh, standing at 13 inches high, its ornate polychrome finish artfully highlights
the light colored wood, engulfing the piece in color and life without overwhelming
its beautifully carved wood features. An incredibly detailed cut wood crown, detailed
plinth, and bands of swirling jewels and flowers cover the Hindu deity in energy
and complexity. In his two lower hands, Ganesh holds a coconut like delicacy and
his own trunk, turned to the left. His upper arms hold an axe and a rope, symbols
of his ability to cut through obstacles or create them as needed. He is the Hindu
god of beginnings and obstacles, placing barriers or removing them. A wonderful
piece with a few minor cracks, in good condition otherwise.
