Origin: China. Circa: early 20th century
H 11 in.(28cm.), W 2.5 in.(6cm.), D 2.5 in.(6cm.)
Condition: minor age cracks, o.a. very good!
Rendered
with elegance in the Ming style, the simple but highly stylized lines of contour
imbue the Bodhidharma with a commanding and spiritual presence, somehow extended
into the unearthly third dimension. Expertly carved from a beautiful piece of
teak wood; the face of the master appears to be in deep contemplation, his high
cheek bones accentuate his downward cast eyes, carved in depth right down to the
pupils. The curve of his lips reveals a faint whiff of the sensual, while the
snail curved hair of his beard and eyebrows indicate his Indian origins. Though
the piece does show some minor cracks in the wood due to its age, it is otherwise
an attractive figure in very good condition.
