Antique
Meiji Carved Okimono Geisha Holding
Parasol
Signed: Chokazu. Circa: early 20th Century
H
5 in.(12.5cm), W 3 in.(7.5cm), D 2 in.(5cm)
Condition: small crackline, o.a. good Okimono
geisha holding a parasol, her Susuki grass themed kimono worn with sophistication;
a second skin, wrapping the figure in a fall theme. In conjunction with the chrysanthemum
hanging loosely from her inwardly curved hand, a coral kanzashi protrudes from
her precisely coiffured hair, signifying the height of fall. A wide simple collar
indicates that this is a mature geisha, well past her training stages, as does
the square, chrysanthemum themed taiko obi attached to her back side. The parasol
is expertly carved, amazingly thin but not brittle. A single tabi wearing foot
peaks out from beneath her kimono; a slight willowy lean in her stance. Though
marred by a few age cracks, a beautiful piece in good condition.
