White Tara (Sitatara) is the youthful, luminous bodhisattva of universal compassion and longevity. Here, she is gracefully rendered in bronze with gilded silver and gold. She is detailed with intricate jewels and set with coral and turquoise. With her youthful body, delicate tilt of the chin and her softly downcast eyes she evokes a sumptuous, compelling human quality. Tara sits in padmasanam asana. Her hands are arched in the varada and vitarka mudras, while two opened lotus stems rise up to frame her in delicate balance. This White Tara is an exquisite example of 19th Tibetan statuary. One of our rare find recently deaccessed after the exhibition in Barcelona Spain.

White Tara
Private Collection

This rare antique Tibetan bronze statue is exceptional in its design and artistry. There is a deeply human and delicate aspect to this Tara. As is typical of traditional depictions of White Tara, this goddess has three visible open eyes that are rendered here at the ajana chakra and in the palm of each hand. Her breasts are full ripe and melon-like. Her countenance is a wonderful fusion of deep inner contentment, peace, equipoise and a sweet bemusement, an inner happiness that experiences the play of form, cycles and life as she embodies lucid emptiness.
