Carrying Flower with Umbrella
Signature: Gyokuyuki, Showa, 1900s" Recorded
in: Contemporary Netsuke by Miriam Kinsey
h. 8 in.(20cm), w. 3 in.(7.5cm), d. 2.5
in.(6.5cm) Condition: excellent! A
large and well carved okimono in pristine ivory, cool and creamy in color, with
fine markings and striations in the material, warming to golden washes on the
back of the figure where the layers meet. A classic representation of a geisha
out for a stroll, a translucent parasol opened above her head. A work of great
charm which conveys a lightness of mood in the relaxed posture, the finely decorated
robes, the basket overflowing with roses, the restrained ornamentation of the
peonies with delicate details of petals and leaves slightly stained with pigment,
the beautifully rendered hair swept into elaborate forms with two loose tendrils
at the nape of her neck. The face is smooth and serene and wears a slight smile
on which a trace of red pigment remains. Signature in red on a horn reserve at
the bottom:Gyokuyuki. Gyokuyuki is known for his flowers, manju and figures.
