Japanese Carved Netsuke Blind
Traveler
Immortal Mind of Bliss Signature: unsigned, circa:
early 1900S' h.
2.25 in.(5.5cm), w. 1.25 in.(3cm), d. 0.75 in.(2cm) Condition:
Excellent! Well
conceived and executed netsuke in cream colored ivory, engraved with sumi, expressive
and well carved appealing subject--an Immortal whose enlightened wisdom brings
great merriment and benevolence. Simply clad and carrying a small walking stick,
the figure may represent the Immortal Rahula, the son of Buddha, who is distinguished
by his “ domed head, bushy eyebrows and hooked nose,” whose retinue comprises
a thousand bodhisattvas.
