Antique
Japanese Carved Netsuke Hotei
Traveling
with Two Karako
Signature: Masatsugu, circa: mid 19th Century Recorded
artist in Netsuke, A Comprehensive Study Based on The MT Hindson Collection
by NK Davey, #1489 h.
1.75 in.(4.5cm), w. 1 in.(2.5cm), d. 0.75 in.(2cm) Condition:
minor chips, hairlines! Well
conceived and executed netsuke in aged gold cream patina, engraved flower motifs
with sumi, expressive and well carved appealing subject. Happy Buddha Hotei, an
Immortal whose enlightened wisdom brings great merriment and benevolence. Here
he is simply clad, belly exposed, with a large treasure sack on his back, while
one boy is riding on his shoulders, another boy by his side grabbing the walking
stick with a mischievous smile. The tiny figures are in three dimensional depth
of considerably dynamic gestures. The miniature carving is broad yet ultra fine.
A toe on Hotei's left foot and the cloth in his left hand appeared to be chipped;
otherwise the netsuke is in good condition.
