Antique
Japanese Carved Netsuke Bumpy
Frog Riding Wooden Clog Signature:
Masayuki, Circa: 19th Century Recorded in: Netsuke, M.T. Hindson Collection
by Neil K. Davey #1510 H 1 in.(2.5cm), W 1.2 in.(3cm), D 2 in.(5cm) Condition:
excellent!
A
lively model of a warty frog lifting one leg climbing onto a wooden clog for
a boat ride. In its subject and treatment, the netsuke is intuitively charming
in as much as its essential aesthetics. This spontaneity sharpens the nature of
playfulness-- but not without a metaphorical bent. In essence, the netsuke demonstrates
the artist's earthy humor, which is amplified in the body language add to the
characterization, and in the carving of the rough and warty skin of the toad.
