well cast Japanese bronze koro combining ancient motifs with hand chased details.
In keeping with the
Buddhist ritual origins of such bronzes, various mythical creatures are featured
around four ornamental floral panels of peony blossoms. Starting
from the base of the koro, three intricately stylized bats in raised relieves
are adorning the hexagon
shaped plinth, and three Chinese
taotie masks are presented atop each leg of the censer; which resembles the face
of the Garuda-lion, one of the three Victorious Creatures of Harmony. Supporting
the handles are two single-horned makaras derived from Indian iconography. And
the lid of the censer is mounted with a spiral tailed writhing dragon. With a
deep copper patina illumined by traces of green malachite, the censer appears
to be heavy for its size, and remaining in in
very good condition.
