Sukhothai Gilt Bronze Artifact
Buddha Torso
Circa: 13th-14th
century H
4 in.(10cm.), W 3.25 in.(8cm.), D 1.5 in.(4cm.)
Condition: as shown This
elegant fragment expresses in its grace and formality the overriding aesthetic
which asserted itself during the Sukhothai era in Thailand. Having absorbed traditions
of China, India, Cambodia, Burma, etc., Thai artists resolved the many influences
into a true national style which still dominates Thai art. Preferring qualities
of quietude and an ornamented stillness, Thai sculptures adhere to the style set
out in the 13th century. A controlled energy is palpable even in this small work,
which by its purity and simplicity contains monumentality in miniature. Private Collection | |
