A
large and colorful Maitreya, the Buddha of the Future, promising an end to all
misfortune, a time when wishes shall be fulfilled and defilements overcome. He
is a deity of bountifulness and generosity whose name in Sanskrit means “merciful
one.” He is also known as the laughing Buddha. His aspect is always cheerful and
gentle, qualities enhanced by the soft-hued coloration of this stone carving,
with tones of pastel green and old rose contrasting with the bright gilding still
covering the face, hands and feet, and the aureole behind his head, which is placed
before a flaming mandorla, the surface worn by time to a softness that is harmonious
and inviting.
