Sleeping
wooden Shakymuni, in the well known pose of attaining par nirvana, or reclining
buddha. A beautifully carved Chinese sculpture, the wood still retains much of
the original paint. A green robe, fanning fabric tracing folds of gravity descended
upon the Buddha’s earth bound body, his head is covered by snail curved hair,
a uniform cap upon a peaceful, dozing expression. The Buddha’s skin has been painted
a flesh color, a majority of which still clings to the wood. Long and lean, the
carving is made from a single piece of wood, though one large crack runs the length
of the body. Asides from this crack and paint loss, the piece remaining in good
condition.
