Bronze Buddha Statue Sukhothai
Buddha Sea
Calming Gesture
Thailand, Early 20th century H 15 in.(37.5cm), W 3.5 in.(9cm), D 3.5 in.(9cm)
Condition: very Good Having
absorbed traditions of China, India, Cambodia, Burma, etc, Thai artists resolved
many influences into a true national style set out in the 13th century which still
dominates Thai art, preferring qualities of quietude and an ornamented stillness
that express Thai sensibilities. A powerful energy of reassurance and peace emanates
from this work, the raised hands in double abaya mudra known as the "sea calming
gesture" that is pacifying and elegant. The robe is thin and clings to the body
of the Buddha, flowing gently outward in two waves of fabric! that continue around
the back with only a few simple lines describing the folds and the sacred scarf
which is draped over his left shoulder.

| A
superb Thai Buddha, finely cast and finished with delicate hand chasing in the
features of the face, the circular folds of the neck, the curling locks of the
usnisha and other details around the base. A rich patina has developed in umber
tones beneath traces of remaining gilding. Typical Sukhothai elements are the
flame of enlightenment which rises from the Buddha’s head, the rounded arcs of
the eyebrows which meet at the center and form the bridge of the nose, the full
lips delineated by incised lines. Its proportions are classical as well, with
the Buddha standing tall, slender and upright upon a lotus base which surmounts
a plinth decorated around the bottom with bas relief carvings of the twelve astrological
animals. The mood and features are sensitively modeled, the artist applying prodigious
skills and depth of understanding in the creation of a deeply moving and purifying
work of art.
