Unsigned
early 19th century netsuke depicting an unnamed sennin tranquilly seated while
holding a bamboo cane. His facial expression is remarkably vivid, an intense gaze
projecting into the distance through his inlayed black stag horn eyes. A well
worn nose added charm to his serious look, giving the piece a center from which
his forceful character radiates outward. Other notable features include his draped
cloak, carved through beard, etched and contoured hair, the arch of his foot,
and his relaxed but attentive posture; all suggest the work a master carver. An
excellent piece made from walrus tusk, and in good condition.
