fine Japanese antique antler netsuke of organic beauty. The rustic sennin seated
here looking upward with large coral inlaid eyes, cocking his head charmingly
sideways as if he is contemplating on the universe above. Rendered in broad strokes
his highly animated face is charmingly evocative. The sennin's prodigious belly
is exposed. He wears a coat of leaves that reveals his immortality status. A large
and spirited three legged toad conveys a sense of natural wonder. The underside
bottom of the ivory is defined by the natural aberrations of the antler. Like
most early 19th century netsuke, it is unsigned. Despite its age, overall the
Gama Sennin is in very good condition.
