joined in the dhyani concentration mudra, seated upon a double-lotus cushion over
a lotiform pedestal detailed with renditions of floral motifs, and enveloping
the Buddha in the center is a cloud-patterned curved-leaf nimbus, forming a lacquered
and gilded heavenly throne, a striking contrast to the black/gray natural wood
of the unpainted figure, of which including the lotus pedestal was
carved from a single solid piece of Japanese cypress. Through this contrariety
in features, it appears that the spiritual essence of the Buddha is advocated
with a subtle earthy countenance.
