| | Considering
the history of Vietnam as part of the Chinese empire since Eastern Han dynasty
(first and second centuries A.D.), in the field of art the Chinese influence was
undoubtedly pervasive. From the brick tombs of Vietnam to its common architecture
and sculptural creations, it's a fact that Vietnamese artworks are scarcely distinguishable
from artifacts found in Southern China. Evidently due to this Buddha's stylistic
similarity to the Chinese statue, and the triple lotus plinth that closely related
to Buddhas found in the Ming Era. Conciliating the subtle differences in the cultural
countenance, his South East Asian origin was revealed in the hairlines and intricately
modeled fingers; by collating from the artifacts of the Nguyen dynasty, the provenance
of this enigmatic 24K gold gilded bronze Buddha is attributed to early to mid
19th century Vietnam. A rare and beautiful find!
