19th century okimono is the Jurojin, one of the Seven Gods of Luck, in a stately
posture wearing the robes and hat of a scholar and holding a wisdom scroll. Jurogin,
the Star God of Longevity who is widely worshipped for his role in administering
the span of life on earth, is also the patron of scholarly success. The fine walrus
ivory is an even cream color with markings and age cracks, engraved with an interesting
array of motifs, including feathers and leaves, geometric designs punctuated with
dots, gyres and floating clouds.
