Born
in Kajimachi, Gifu around 1770. When Tomokazu was a boy, he went to work for a
reputable family named Shibata. Tomokazu liked carving and painting, thus devoted
all his spare time in the pursuit, and eventually scolded by his master for spending
time in this manner. Thereafter he waited until his master and workers were asleep,
then assiduously practice his arts and made great progress. One day, his master
happened to see his work again and was lost in great admiration. Then
the master offered Tomokazu his full support. Tomokazu later went to Kyoto, where
his name became well-known. Upon his return to Gifu, Tomokazu remained near the
Kannondo Temple at Mokuyama, near the foot of Kinkazan Mountain. He built a hermitage
where he practiced his arts and lived liken to a Zen monk. The time of his death
is uncertain. But it was probably during Tempo (1830-1843), when it is said that
he was over 70 years of age. The figure of Kannon enshrined in the rest hut of
the present Mokuyama Temple is attributed to Tomokazu. |
