A
well carved Kannon wearing necklaces of precious pearls, seated in meditation
posture holding the water vase on a lotus throne atop a celestial elephant. Chinese
influence is seen in the composition and ornamentation as well as the anatomical
accuracy of the elephant, nicely portrayed with draping ears, wrinkled skin and
folds of the hide, curving trunk and jeweled saddle cloth with feet paused on
a cloud-patterned base. Ivory is cream to gold and well marked with striations
and layering. Traces of red stain remaining.
