Condition: excellent! Private Collection | | Beautifully
carved late 19th Century netsuke with bold delineation, compact form and classic
proportions. This netsuke exemplifies the period in its symmetrical composition
and the rugged quality of the engraved lines. The netsuke represents a Chinese
lion with hieratic features. The forward mane of the beast is sectioned into six
curling masses ending in snail curls. The ears are laid back against the massive
head, the brow is deeply furrowed above the glaring coral inlaid eyes, flared
nostrils and bared teeth in a carved through mouth. He is playfully laying on
his back, with four claws gripping a large ball; which is also carved through
with a free rolling small ball inside. The aged patina appears to be a color of
pale gold, the moist and density of the material indicating that the netsuke is
carved from the center of the tusk. The simplicity of this piece shows strength
and a level of artistry which, along with its age, mark it as a work of integrity.
