Japanese Netsuke in fine quality tusk ivory, cream color with a warm age patina,
depicting a man holding a Daruma doll. It is the custom in Japan to acquire an
eyeless Daruma doll early in the year, and to paint one eye on the doll as one
makes a wish for the success of a plan or goal. When the goal has been achieved
or the boon granted, one paints the other eye in gratitude and celebration of
success. Here a seated man, attired prosperously in three layers of clothing,
has just finished painting in the second eye of the ever-lugubrious Daruma. Engraved
with geometric and foliate patterns in the robes; embbroidery on the soft hat
of freely drawn clouds--a celebration of Japanese culture and traditions.
