This is a substantial and exquisite masterpiece by the 19th century artist
Hogen Rakumin. Rakumin was the founder of two large schools and is known for both
his work in ivory and wood with inlaid materials.
Carved of lightly stained pine, this netsuke exhibits consummate detail
and workmanship. The gracefully draped cloth of the kimono is patterned with a
subtle symmetrical pattern. Okame carries a miniature pouch replete with kagamibuta.
She also carries a a pipe case on her back. The bottoms of the soles of her shoes
show minuscule marks of uniform stitching. Her face is rendered here in ivory
as a traditional Noh mask, the archetype of the delightful girl. The figure features
nine inlays of ivory, horn, pearl and red coral and is subtly signed by the artist
on the left side beneath the tobacco pouch. This exceptional find is a highly
rendered example of the art form. (SD)
