Four Karako Netsuke

This playful and highly detailed netsuke shows mothers and children dancing in celebration as they hold the Peach of Longevity. The Longevity Peach is one of the boons from the Sennin, the immortals. In Asia the peach is also considered a potent sign of fertility. The kimonos worn by the karako each display a unique and compelling textile design. Their facial expressions are both unique but reflect their mutual mirth. They are playful but with a certain level of depth and breadth. There is a natural motion to this ivory, an activation of centrifugal forces. The Peach is held up high above the dancing group. This ivory beautifully communicates the delight that is so often indicative of the netsuke artform. It is in excellent condition. (SD)
