Aged
to golden cream colored close-grained ivory with trangular design. The posture
of the sleeping archer with one leg drawn up behind the other, the depiction of
Mongolian features with deep eye sockets and slitted lids; the strong graphic
quality, sumi and inlay, decorative motifs, large size, age patina and surface
wear are atypical of netsuke of 18th century. A time when the subject of foreigners
had become immensely popular through books and prints. Netsukeshi made good use
of such resources, carving exotic subjects according to these early images, as
in this Mongolian archer with quilted cape, thick boots and decorated quiver.
