Mokugyo wooden gong for chanting the Buddhist Sutras, and it is varied in sizes.
The largest mokugyo in Japan, possibly the world, is over 2.5 meters in diameter.
Here in this thumb-sized mokugyo, two finely carved dragon fish heads meeting
to form the handhold, while a bulbous cavity comprises the sounding block. The
rendition of this netsuke was carved through a thin line stretches around the
base of the piece, and anchored by two small holes on opposite end of the line,
meticulously carved out to a cavity with a paper-thin casing, which when struck
with a small pencil or bamboo brush, it emits a soothing percussive sound much
like the vibrating wings of a cricket. Signed Yugyoku Do (carved). The antique
netsuke is tactile and in excellent preservation.
